  Detail: Leica has various patents for the optical designs of different types of lenses. Other companies either use them to make the lenses or directly consult Leica engineers for a new lens design. In p9’s case, Huawei collaborated with Leica for a 27mm f2.2 summarit dual lens design. The twist is, one one of the sensors is a monochrom, which is something Leica mastered in its monochrom M cameras. The dual design gives p9 more light intensity information thus, more Dynamic Range (shadow and highlight detail) in the pictures.

  Huawei claims deep collaboration with Leica and the camera ‘meets Leica’s highest imaging quality standards”, but designing is something, and actually manufacturing and Leica’s stringent Quality Checks are a completely different ball game which, price wise, would’ve made the phone out of reach for most.
