    I suggest MPC-HC (Mediaplayer classic homecinema, not the normal mediaplayer classic) for 720p playback combined with CoreAVC 1.8.5.0. I've had 0 problems playing back even high bitrate 720p HD-DVD rips that I've made with it, and it's more than 2x faster than any libavcodec based decoders (FFDShow, VLC). I recommend disabling the internal h264 decoder and mkv splitter and switching to EVR (or EVR custom presenter if you use subtitles) once you install it, atom's powerful enough with coreavc to play back most of my 720p h264 videos even at 800mhz on battery power. If only GMA950 had h264 decode acceleration, here's hoping the next netbook chipset does :D
