  It’s no secret that Eric loves guitar shopping (no wonder we love him), and he doesn’t buy them just for himself. In 1970, he was browsing through a Nashville guitar store called Sho-Bud. He came across a rack of used 1950s Stratocasters in the back of the store — and bought them all. “They were so out of fashion you could pick up a perfectly genuine Strat for two or three hundred dollars — even less!” remembered Eric. “So I bought all of them. I gave one to Steve Winwood, one to George Harrison, and one to Pete Townshend.”

  Out of the three remaining Strats, Eric liked the way a black ’56 looked, the way the neck felt on a different ’57, and the sound of the pickups from the third guitar. He turned mad scientist, choosing his favorite parts from the three guitars to create his ideal black Strat. The one piece he didn’t put back was the vibrato arm. Eric doesn’t use a whammy bar. Instead he has the vibrato blocked behind the bridge and has the vibrato springs tightened to keep the sound solid. He would refer to this guitar as “a hybrid, a mongrel,” but more often than not he called it Blackie.
