  DEFENDING TIPS
  The new defending system of FIFA 12 is probably the biggest chance in years. Our FIFA12TIPS.com team experimented a lot with this new system which resulted in the following FIFA 12 defending tips. Check also the FIFA12 defending tutorial.

  Be patient and contain
  Sounds as a simple and logical FIFA 12 defending tip but a lot of people are too much in a hurry and want to steal the ball as soon as possible so they can score. Maybe possible against the CPU on “amateur” or your 2 year old little “button-smashing” sister but not on a higher level. So don’t try to steal the ball as soon the opponent is on your half. Just be patient and fill the gaps so it isn’t possible to pass forward (to striker/forwards) and create a defensive wall. That doesn’t mean you can’t play attractive football, set work rate on defending or that you need a custom formation. The main thing is: keep it compact and don’t leave gaps. Theoretical this is also possible with 3 defenders.

  Stay between the opponent with the ball and their striker
  Don’t select always the player that is the closest to the attacker with the ball. Select a player to cover and use second press (but don’t tackle) to press on the player with the ball (only to close the gaps). As long as you keep your ‘defensive wall’ and don’t leave any gaps they can’t score. Simple as that. So keep the defense in FIFA 12 compact.

  

  Avoid using too much ‘second press’
  When you use second press, it gives spaces for the attackers. So use this option only when you have a player behind to cover the open space.

  Tackle only when needed
  Tackling in FIFA 12 like in the previous FIFA versions doesn’t work anymore. With the new FIFA 12 defending system you have to time a lot better and wait for the opportunity. This is mostly around the 18 yards box and the attacker is running towards goal. Also, when your opponent uses a skill move: don’t tackle/slide, only when you’re 100% sure. Best way to defend this is to walk with your opponent and stay between him and the goal. So again, be patient and wait for the right moment.

  Select your player with RS (right stick) instead of ‘switch button’
  In FIFA 12 it’s better to select your player with right stick instead of the switch button. Press/tab the right stick in the direction of the player you want to control. IMPORTANT: with the right stick you will be able to select a player before your opponent can pass the pass. When the ball is on the wing and he want to pass back to the center, make sure you select as soon as possible a center defender to cover this. This allows you also to use the ‘second press’ button to defend your opponent. Now you have the possibility to defend and to give also cover with your selected

  

  Some other FIFA 12 defending facts

  - Using the old ‘legacy mode’ defending system in FIFA 12 isn’t a good idea. With online ranked matches, ultimate team online and online clubs you are forced to use the new FIFA 12 defending system.
  - A formation with a CDM (f.e. 4-1-2-1-2) works extremly well with defending. Your opponents midfielders and forwards have less space.
  - A lot of team FIFA12TIPS.com prefer to switch the RB (X360) / R1 (PS3) button with B (X360) / O (PS)
