The sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz was decided. It was the only choice we could make after long deliberation, and the selection of 44.1 kHz as opposed to 44.056 was simply for the reason that it was easier to remember- there was no other reason. Sony made the excellent choice of 16-bit resolution, although Philips had developed a 14-bit D/A converter at the time, leading Philips to argue initially that itwas impossible to redesign its converters for 16 bits in a short enough time. But my colleague Carel Oijkmans said,''No problem. I know a small trick to turn a 14 bitconverter into a 16 bitc onverter- it'scalled oversampling, ''So we managed to solve that problem quite easily as it happened. As a result, all the first Philips players had oversampling converters in them.

A szomorú az, hogy újabban már a Philips által kiadott marketinges szövegek is erről a IX. szimfóniás magyarázatról szólnak, holott a CD fejlesztéséért felelős vezető mérnökök önéletrajzi írásaikban és publikációikban számtalanszor leírták, hogy ezt utólag magyarázták bele.

The original target storage capacity for the world’s first CD was maintained at one hour of audio content, while the disc diameter was decided to be sufficient at 115mm. However, interestingly, both parties decided to extend this capacity to 74 minutes so that the CD could accommodate a complete performance of Beethoven’s 9th symphony. Thus, we can safely say that if it weren’t for Beethoven and his grand music, we wouldn’t be having a whole hour plus fourteen minutes on CDs currently available today!
